Senator Murray at Everett Labor Temple in Everett, WA, listening to local retirees and public workers talk about what the Social Security Fairness Act will mean for them.
Dear Friend,
For years, many public workers in Washington state and across the country—including firefighters, police officers, teachers, and state and local government workers—haven’t been receiving the full Social Security benefits they’ve earned due to an outdated law. But that’s about to change. The Social Security Fairness Act, legislation that I fought for years for, has been signed into law and will fix this fundamental unfairness to ensure that public service employees who work so hard to make our communities better can count on getting their full benefits when it’s time to retire.
I’ve heard from so many of you about how these unfair provisions have affected you, and I’ve been committed to righting this wrong. With this new law about to go into effect, I met with local retirees in Everett to hear what this change will mean for them and their families—and the over 42,000 people in Washington state who will now get their full benefits. It’s simple—after years of public service, these folks deserve to retire with the financial security they worked so hard for.
Fixing this unfair system has been a priority for me because I know just how important Social Security is to retirees across Washington state—and how critical it is that our country live up to its promise that those who spend their lifetime paying into Social Security can rely on this lifeline later in life. I’ll keep fighting to strengthen Social Security, protect benefits, and help make sure every American can retire with dignity.
If you’re a public worker or retiree, make sure your contact and direct deposit information is updated with the Social Security Administration, and if you have a spouse, make sure they file now—as they could be eligible for new benefits! In service,
Patty Murray
